Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Organising your home does involve decluttering - but please do not think that this means getting rid of everything you own! The most organised of homes can run smoothly amid what looks to an outsider to be a messy home, and the most neat and tidy looking homes can still be unorganised. The trick is to find a happy medium where you are organised to the level you want to be, and you have your home as tidy as you want it to be. These tips will no doubt help you on your way to becoming clutter free, and remember - only you know what your clutter is - what looks like clutter to one person is someone elses treasure! the trick really is to be critical to yourself about whether you really need or use it within your home and your life.

Decluttering means making your environment work better for you so you can find and use those things that do matter to you.
Another advantage of decluttering is that you do gain more space within rooms, and this space can help you become more organised by using it for storage, or simply for having some space for your home to breath.
Many of my clients have found that just de-cluttering a room can transform it – and possibly saves the need for complete redecoration as it gives the whole space a new lease of life. Your decoration and accessories can get lost amongst the clutter collected in everyday life very easily. People constantly strive for the modern, show home look so that they can have friends round and feel proud of their home – but it is often easy to forget that show homes are NOT real life – they do not have to have all the items that we all collect during our lives cluttering up the place, and they can be seen to be more spacious and thus more enticing.
In recent years the term “de-cluttering” has a very bad press, and is thought only to be a requirement for those houses that you can barely walk around for the mess. In actual fact we all have clutter in our homes, it’s a fact of life! Clutter is simply anything that is not needed or loved in your home, or something that is not in its correct home. Therefore the only thing we need to be wary of is keeping it under control, and that can make all the difference in a home. You can have the most beautiful home, but if it has clutter (to whatever level) it will never feel as comfortable and relaxing and finished as you would like.
There are many reasons why we have clutter in our houses – life is busy and it is inevitable that some amount of clutter will build up. But it should be noted that it can make people depressed and unable to relax in their own home. They may feel overwhelmed at the task of sorting everything out, and many just start to ignore it. However, if it’s kept under control it is easier to create a beautiful and relaxing home.
But where do you start?
First things first – prepare! Have a variety of boxes and bin liners to hand, along with sticky labels, marker pens etc. This will make your life easier as you go through your home. Start with one room/area at a time. For every item you find, ask yourself whether you want to keep it or get rid of it.
Keep it - Is it in the right room / area of a room? - if not move it Is it useful? (keep it to hand but not visible) Is it beautiful? (display where possible)
Get rid of it - Is it still in good working order? - If so give it to family/friends or charity If not, can it be recycled? If not, THROW IT AWAY Have a box for each of the three (charity, recycle, rubbish) and start filling them!

Take one area at a time – you will then start to see a real difference rather than if you jump from place to place - have a box with you for items that don't belong in that room, and when you have finished with a room, move on to the next one and take out anything in the box that belongs there - by the time you are around the house you should have an empty box and everything will have its place.
Don't get sidetracked - its easy to do and its the most common reason that clients have for wanting help with decluttering. Find ways of keeping going, even setting a timer for 15 minutes and making sure that you stay focussed for this amount of time will pay dividends. A short time each day thats focussed is better than trying to do a whole day but getting sidetracked while you go - you won't feel you have finished anything, and that may make you give up.
Start small - if you are feeling overwhelmed just give yourself 15 mins and a drawer - once you have done this you will more often than not feel motivated to continue
Even a few minutes a day will help you to get your home organised
Group like items together - then you will know where they are when you need them
Put things in the room / area that you use them - for easy access and less time wasted
