Home Organisation Q&A

Common Questions I get asked - if you have a question you would like answered then please do not hesitate to contact www.OrganiseMyHouse.co.uk and your question will appear in future newsletters or even here on this page!

  • I want to get organised - but where do I start?
    • Always start where it hurts the most. This means that wherever you are finding you are wasting the most time, energy and/or money by not being organised. For example, are you forever losing your car keys, and also losing important post in the piles of paperwork that is building up in your hallway? Start there - once you can always find your car keys, and your post is being dealt with in an organised way then you will really see and feel the benefits and be motivated to continue.
  • Is it easier just to throw loads away - then I won't need to organise?
    • People commonly assume that an organised house has to look very minimal - but the idea of organisation is about functionality rather than aesthetics. Of course, many people naturally want to look organised as well as be organised - so the two go hand in hand a lot - but please don't feel that you need to throw anything out - especially if you don't want to. The organising process does involve decluttering, but only to the extent of items that are not functional or sentimental in your home. You may throw everything you own away but still be left with an unorganised house that needs organising again in a few months. If you organise now, then its a lifestyle change that will work forever.
  •  What do I do if I don't have the time to get organised?
    • This is one of the most common things that people say when it comes to getting organised. Yes, organising takes time and effort to complete, but once it has been done it will only take a few moments each day to stay organised - so in the long run you will be saving so much time that you will have more time than ever for the other, more important things in your life. A little effort and time spent now in getting organised will free up tonnes of time when done - time to relax, take up a new hobby, work, spend with family and friends, the list is endless!

  • What one thing will make the most difference in my home?
    • This is a very personal answer, as it will be different for everyone - however -  having a sense of being organised is really important, and getting everyone in the household involved is equally so - so something that has both these items within in is the creation of the Home File - This file will bring family life together, and everyone will know whats what - so things should run more smoothly.
  • How can I get the whole family on board with organising the house?
    • Making the process very visual often helps, and by giving small rewards to family members who help with organising and maintaining the organised home will reap its benefits. These rewards could simply be a family games night at home (using some of your new found time!)

  • How can I keep motivated?
    • Motivation is different for different people, some people are motivated enough when they start seeing results around the house. When an area is really organised it gives a great sense of satisfaction. Others are more rewards based - and if you are one of these people, why not treat yourself to a glass of wine at the end of the day, or a hot bubble bath - something that will relax you and make you feel content will do wonders! Another great incentive to keep motivation at a peak is to have a goal to aim towards - so organise a party at your house for a couple of months time, by which time you will have needed to get a lot of the organising done so you will be proud to show people into your home.

  • I have such a messy house, surely I can't get it that organised
    • Messy houses can be organised, just like minimalistic houses can be disorganised. Organisation is the functional side of the house and NOT the aesthetics. It ensures that everyone knows what happening, where they should be, and where everything is in the home. If you are happier in a more messy home then this does not necessarily need to change, but you may find that once you start organising then a less messy house will naturally follow. Organising is about working with your habits and not against them - if you try and work against them too much you will find that you naturally lose the desire to keep a system in place.
