Tips to Get your Magazines organised today
Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!

  • We all buy magazines, and usually only for one or two articles that spring out from the front page. So why not look for ways not to spend so much on them in the first place?
    • Consider buying a subscription to a magazine you buy regularly, they often have great reductions off the cover price, and offer free items as a thank you - which could make great gifts
    • Why not talk to a few friends and see if you could share each others magazines? If you are all buying the same one each month it makes sense to buy one different one each and then swap - that way you are getting a low price magazine as your subscribing, but also being able to read more as a result
    • Some libraries have magazines in them that you can read for free - take a look and see whats on offer!
    • Why not ask for a subscription for a christmas present - or give one - they are the gift that you keep getting all year round!

  • If you do want or need to keep magazines, you need to store them so that they are easily accessible - otherwise whats the point of having them? I recommend storing by name and then by date - and have sticky tabs such as post it notes coming out of the top of them which highlight any particular articles you are likely to need. This works well for hobbies and work. Used well they can make a great resource.
  • Choose magazine storage that has enough space for what you would usually keep (if you only keep your magazines for a couple of months, and have 4 a month - then you only need a small storage box that can fit 10 at most). Don't get too much capacity in your storage as you are more likely to fill it, and don't get too little as you are then likely to have magazine piles elsewhere.
  • Keep your magazines stored together, and in the place that they are most used (i.e. on a shelf in your home office if used for work, in the bathroom if you read in the bath, in your bedroom if you read in bed, in the living room if they are used by more than one member of the family, etc...)
  • Don't just throw magazines away - at the very least recycle them, but even better, give them to charity, dentists or doctors surgeries.

  • You don't have to store ALL the magazines - a great tip I use is when reading through a magazine, any articles that I want to keep I simply fold the corner of that page down. Once you have read the whole magazine, flick through and rip out the articles you have wanted to keep. Then you can throw away the rest. A step further is to put these clippings in small plastic files of their own, in catagories (recipes, health and fitness, interior design, gift ideas etc....) and then when you have some time you can simply take out the articles and use them. This way you are sort of making your very own magazines!
  • Analyse exactly what magazines you love, which ones you get but don't really read, what you have time to read, and what you are interested in - and then work out exactly which magazines you would like to conitue reading - and stop the rest! Most of use seem to forget to stop subscriptions as most just automatically renew for us. Its important to stay focussed on whether you really want them anymore, or even whether a different one would now be better for you.

  • Children love magazines - especially young children. Make it a treat to get one on a rainy day or a day when you have no plans, and read it with your little one. There are usually loads of ideas for things to do, and lots of educational activities as well. If you do this then they are worth every penny!
  • Think about whether the information you want to get from a magazine can be just as easily found for free online.....
  • If you struggle to find time to read when you are at home, ensure you take your magazine (or articles from it) out with you, and then you have something that you really want to read when you have a few minutes waiting in a queue, or on the train etc...
