Tips to Get your Birthdays organised today!
Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
GENERAL TIPS -
  • How many times have you forgotten a birthday in the last few months? To ensure you don't forget again try and do at least one (but ideally both) of these things:-
            • Buy a birthday book - a simple way to add in all birthdays by month. Sometimes they have space for cards as well - especially useful if you find cards over the year that you need to save for the right person (I find that keeping christmas cards bought in the january sales is best this way as i don't forget about them then!)
            • Add all birthdays to your diary every year, and also have a reminder the week before to buy a card/present and post it - then you will never have the excuse of forgetting (YES it is time consuming - but it saves you lots of time throughout the year in rushing to the shops/post office etc... when you have forgotten someones birthday!)
  • Try and always have a set of cards in a drawer somewhere (ideally where you store all items to do with post and wrapping so that you don't have to hunt around your house!) - have some for every genre (birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, births, new house, new job etc..), gender, age, and also keep some blank cards for those occasions where its hard to find the exact card you want to send! That way if you do miss the shops you will be able to find a suitable card with ease.

  • Have a box somewhere for presents to give to people - these can be collected as you find them throughout the year, they could also be presents you have received that you won't use (but if you do this please remember to tag with who bought it for you - as you would hate to re-gift it back to them!). This is especially useful for childrens friends - as they always seem to have a party to go to!!!! Finding things in sales and on offer throughout the year means that you won't have to necessarily spend so much for every present, but you will still get the ideal gift.
  • For your own and your families gifts - try and create a gift wish list (your home file is ideal for this as everyone can easily access it) - whenever someone mentions that they would like something, or you think of something that would be great - add it to this list and then use it for inspiration when the next time to buy something comes up (it will also save you time hunting for the ideal gift, and ensure that you get what you want as well!)

PARTY TIPS -
  • REMEMBER THE BIRTHDAY GIRL/BOY - ensure that their favourites are prominent - this is the time to be selfish and get what you want!
  • Themes - they can be very in your face and obvious - or more subtle - but sometimes they are great to get everyone in the party mood before they arrive - what about a simple theme like getting everyone to dress up in something a certain colour or genre or style, or have the venue as a theme, or just create a simple theme such as cocktails! Ask the person whos party it os what they want, and try and ensure its suitable for the location and the amount of guests etc...
  • Think about your guest list - how many people will your party venue hold comfortably? Whats your budget? Writing a list will also help you to see whether you have a balance of people (ideal parties are when guests have things in common, so try and ensure that noone will be too by themselves). When thinking abouc small childrens parties, numbers can get out of control quite quickly as you have to consider parents as well!
  • Think about food - will you or won't you have this - is the party timed correctly so that your guests will be hungry?! it sounds obvious but if it starts at say 8pm then a lot of guests may assume they need to eat first - so your time and money may be wasted if you have a huge buffet on offer.
  • Think about when to have the party - if your birthday is around a bank holiday then it would be worth not having it on that date as many people may be away for instance. If you are planning something on a busy day, then just ensure that your guests know about it well in advance.
  •  Ensure invitations are very specific - especially if you want your guests to bring / do anything for the party. (i.e. dress up, bring a bottle, bring a game etc...). Also ensure that you keep a list of who you have invited, and who has replied - so you are sure of numbers etc...
  •  Plan your party well in advance, and try and visualise how you want it to be - then you can work back and you will have a better idea of what you are aiming for. You will also find out whats important to you this way (especially if budget is an issue)
  • For childrens parties, think about sharing the cost of hiring somewhere by joining up with other childrens parents - that way your child will get a great party, and all their friends will be there (especially useful if you have friends with similar birthday dates as you could find you have all arranged a party on the same day!)
  • Ensure that you have all the party supplies you need - you will be surprised at what is needed to decorate a venue - or even your home. There are great websites out there that you can purchase everything from in one go - or shop around for bargains - whatever your time allows. Think of the food table, how people are going to eat (plates, cutlery, napkins etc...), streamers, banners, party poppers, centre of table displays, food, drinks, cups, party favours, party bags, items for the theme... the list is endless!
  • Its easy to think about making the venue look great, and having food available for guests - but a lot of people actually forget about what their guests will do once they get there. Think about music, ambience, games, entertainment, in fact anything that guests will enjoy doing when they are there.
  • ENJOY THE PARTY ONCE IT STARTS - you deserve it!
