Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Remember there are only 24 hours in a day - and be realistic about what you can fit into each day. As a rule of thumb when planning your day give yourself extra time in between each item as you will always have unexpected things to deal with such as traffic, a phone call, an errand to run, a poorly child etc....
Always allow for flexibility in your plans. If you are often sidetracked by the unexpected then try and get yoru high priority items done first - then you will become less stressed if you find you can't do more that day (however be aware that if you only ever get to do the high priority items then those items that were once considered low priority will slowly creep up to be higher and higher priority as time goes on)
Spend 15 minutes the evening before to plan the next day - that way you will be aware of exactly what you need to do, and be ready to start as soon as you wake. If you try and do this on the day itself it is a lot easier to get sidetracked and lose half the day before you know it.
Have a master "TO DO" list in the front of your diary - for items that you want to get done at some point, but that don't have a specific date to be done by. When you are planning your day and have any free time, take a look at this list and add something into your plan. Try and aim to do one of these items a week or a month (depending on their size) - then you will not only get the day to day stuff done, but also tackle more long term goals.
Ensure that you have enough space in your diary to list all things you need to do each day - use a different colour pen for different items if required, or have a set space in the diary for each type of thing (i.e. errands to run, appointments, reminders etc....)
Take a look at our FREEBIES section for some great time management downloads that may help you run your day more smoothly
Try and ensure every day is balanced - with some time for work, leisure, family, yourself, exercise etc.... (look at our BLOG article for more information on this - CLICK HERE)
Start to look at how long daily tasks REALLY take you to do - so you can be more realistic going forward with your daily plans
Group items together so you spend less time on them i.e. in one trip to the shops you could get 4 errands done, rather than spreading them across different days.
Use your day to its best advantage - and make the most of quiet times. Try and go shopping when the shops first open or nearer closing, as you will have to wait less time usually to be served.
Try and multi task on the easier jobs i.e. fold washing when talking on the phone, talk to your family while making tea etc...
At the end of the day, whether it be in a home or an office, make it a habit to tidy everything away. This will save time and energy as you will know where everything is each day, and you will will feel better about everything when you have a tidier home.
Work out what routine works for you each day - do you work better in the evenings? Plan the time after the children are in bed to do some work. Do what suits you best and you are more likely to stick to it.
Most people find that the best way to get things done is to start on the ones that they are not looking forward to doing - then they will be out of the way and you can go on to enjoy your day more.
Get as much out of each day as you can - but don't overfill the time otherwise you will become stressed.
