Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Consider having a hook, basket and/or drawer for each member of the family so they have somewhere to put everything as soon as they come into the house, and they know where to find things when they are leaving
Minimise clutter by only storing most used coats, shoes and bags in the hallway, and the rest in peoples bedrooms (space allowing)
Consider having a basket on the stairs to put things in that need taking upstairs
If you don't have a hall cupboard to hide coats and shoes, have other ways to minimise visual clutter - a wicker lidded basket works well for shoes for example.
If you have the room, this is the best place for a box for charity items or items that need to go back to friends and family, or items that need to go to the library / dry cleaners etc... - then it is easy to grab them on the way out when you know you are heading that way
Ideally have somewhere to sit in this space - for people to put on shoes or talk on the phone - this can be something that has built in storage to make the space work harder
Don't let this area become a dumping ground - keep items that don't belong, moving along - ensure family members do the same
Deal with junk mail coming into the house by throwing away as soon as it comes in - a bin where you open the post will be very effective at stopping piles of paper building up (see paperwork section for more details)
This is the obvious place to keep keys, but ideally keep them out of sight (theives can easily look through a letterbox and if they see keys they will try and get them)
Have a mirror close to the door as this will be useful as you can check yourself before you leave the house
Ensure that there is a space for guests to put their coats and shoes
Ensure there is a mat to wipe feet (saves you time cleaning the floor(s) afterwards
Have somewhere to collect post easily so it can be dealt with straight away
Store out of season coats either with all your out of season clothes, or in a loft etc... out of the way (if you are struggling for space). The less you have to look through to find the one you want, the more time you save
Have a basket in your hall cupboard stocked with seasonally needed items so its easier to leave th house quickly
SUMMER - Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Picnic Blanket, Sun Hats
WINTER - Umbrella, Torch, Scarves, Gloves, Hats
Keep your shoe cleaning kit in your hall cupboard so that its close at hand
Make your entrance welcoming - ensure the number / name of your house is visible, the doorbell works or the knocker is easy to reach, the letterbox works etc...
