Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Don't let this become the place where you just put things to get them out of the way. If you are putting things in here, make sure that you either need to keep them for some reason (such as your memory box, a wedding dress that is sentimental, out of season clothes, spare bedding, luggage, paperwork, christmas decorations etc...). If you won't ever use it again, why keep it?
Sort out whats already in your loft and get rid of anything that you forgot was there, anything that you don't need and won't need in the future, and any rubbish. Then you will have more space and less clutter.
Designate an area in your loft space for each type of item - that way they will be easier to find if they are all kept together - "LIKE WITH LIKE"
Store things in plastic containers as these will deal with the damper conditions better than cardboard boxes - use airtight ones if possible
Think about when / if you move house - how much easier it will be if your loft is pretty much empty - and how much less expense it will be to get it moved!
If this is your only storage facility in your home (i.e. no garage, cellar etc..) then utilise this space as well as possible. have storage systems that maximise the space, add in hanging rails for out of season clothes etc..... - but ensure that you only put there what you actually need.
Write a list of everything in your loft, and stick this to the loft hatch - that way you will know if something is there without having to search in there for hours
Add a light if there isn't one, and board at least some of the floor, so its more useable space
Think about converting the attic if your budget allows - adding an extra room will increase your homes value, and give you more storage and flexibility of the space.
