Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Treat your pet like one of your family - respect and understand its needs
Use a specific place for all your pet supplies - a utility room is perfect, or alternatively a cupboard in the kitchen or garage. Keep all food / bowls / leads / brushes / medicenes etc... in labelled containers in this area so they are easy for anyone pet-sitting to find, as well as family members
Organise 1 or 2 (have a backup ideally) people that will look after your pets when you are away - or even at short notice if an emergency happens. If you don't have this, then you either have to rethink having a pet, or look into other options such as kennels and check that they will work with your lifestyle.
Clean your pet regularly (clip nails, brush etc...)
Ensure all vaccinations, vet visits etc.. are up to date - keep a record of them and a reminder in your diary
Ensure you have good pet insurance - when things go wrong it can be very expensive
Get all the family involved in caring for the pet - if you have a dog for example - why not get older children to walk them once a day - this will teach them responsibility.
Keep litter trays as far away from food as possible
If you install a cat flap, ensure your homes security by having one that only opens for your cat (and electric tag on their collar triggers it to open), or ensure a thief cannot reach any keys on the inside of the door or around the door area
Keep your dog fit - walking is crucial - and it will get you out into the fresh air. (keep a plastic bag, lead etc... in your coat pocket so its ready and waiting - saving you valuable time
Keep you telephone number on pets collars rather than your address - as this is more secure
