Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Don't have loads of photos for the sake of it - print off ones that you really love, and keep them in a way that you can look at them - whether it be in frames around the house or in albums. If you cherish your photos, you will make the most of them
When you print off photos, write on the back of each one any info about it (or add a tag if they are on the computer) - don't let yourself forget when and where they were taken as you may regret it - it will also make it easier when it comes to adding to an album
Have albums that mean something to you - what about one for each member of the family, or for individual events, or (my personal favourite) one for each year - they can then be treated like books and looked at easily.
Before sorting photos, get rid of any duplicates or any that aren't good (this also applies for digital photos)
How would you like your photos stored? scrapbooks, albums, collages, boxes etc.. - use what works for you and then you are more likely to look at them and keep them organised
What about using photos as presents - a very personal touch means so much to people
If saving digital photos, the best way is by time, event or person, that way you will find it easy to find ones when you need them (within each file also save within date/time order)
Think about using a digital camera as you can delete items as you go and keep only the best - saving time and money (you will also be able to know whether your photos are good before you lose the opportunity to take another one!)
If you do use a camera with film, develop them straight away so you don't lose it or damage it - or forget about it!
Save digital photos - and back them up (online backup services exist such as photobox) - you can also easily share photos with friends - secure as they will need a password to access the site - great for when you are on holiday or out of the country to keep family and friends updated.
If you use photo boxes, file away with index cards for ease of retrieval
Digital photo frames are great for giving you the ability to have lots of photos on display without taking up room - and are a great conversation piece too!
For really key photos why not consider a professional to take them - you will get some great traditional or contemporary shots that you may not be able to get otherwise - great for capturing your children / family as it grows up
Try and rotate photos around your home so you always have new ones to look at
Every so often make time to look at your photos - over a bottle of wine it can be a lovely way to think about your past experiences
Get photos onto canvasses for a more contemporary way of displaying them
A great personal gift (works particularly well for grandparents) is a photo calendar - they then get 12 photos of their family to look at throughout the year - especially nice if you have themed photos from the previous year i.e. when children had costumes for parties. I did this a few years ago with my baby daughter and used the photo when she went to a halloween party in a pumpkin outfit - perfect for Octobers picture!
