Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Choose furniture that has lots of storage, and is durable. Try and use every inch of space to its best, but leave lots of floor space for playing as well. ensure that you know what needs to be stored - make a list and then you will be aware of how much storage is required
Always have more storage than is currently needed, as childrens toys have a way of growing quickly!
If you children are getting older, they will also need a place for doing homework - you may choose this to be the playroom so have a space that can be set up as a desk area.
To ensure that you don't spend ages every day / week cleaning and sorting the room, ensure that the floor is easy to clean (a hard floor with a rug works well), and that the children get into the habit of tidying up each thing before they get out another.
Hooks work well on a wall to hang up bags, dressing up clothes etc.. and keep them out of the way but easily accessible
Have a tidying up 10 minutes at the end of each day
Ensure there is a place for everything - labels will help children know what goes where (use picture labels for young children)
Encourage reading by having a bookcase or shelves within reach
For stay at home mums with little ones, make the most of your days by organising in different activities for you and your children. This will make the day more interesting and ensure your children don't get bored.
Organise your playroom with your childrens hobbies in mind - have lots of desk space if they love to do crafts and drawing, or lots of floor space if they are into building blocks and making dens etc...
Keep things like arts and crafts out of reach of little hands - high storage is useful for this - so that they can't get it out and cause havoc when you aren't watching!
If you haven't got a dedicated playroom, double up as a spare room easily with a sofa bed, or your living room by having lots of baskets that the toys can be hidden away in at the end of the day.
Have a declutter regularly and get the children involved - giving some older toys to charity will teach them that not everyone is as fortunate as them. It will also keep the toys under control.
Don't put things out of reach unless they should be!
Make sure any boxes that you have in the room have safety latches so that the lids don't slam down on little fingers
Create areas in the room for each childs toys - just as with their bedrooms they like to have their own space - and this area will be their responsibility to keep tidy
Beanbags are a good idea for seating in this room, as they can be moved easily and can help creating dens etc.... - they also take up less space than chairs so there would be more room to play
