- Todays world is going so fast it is difficult to take time out to pin down exactly where you want to be heading in life. How do you know that you will end up where you want to be? Do you even know where that is? Getting to grips with your priorities is fundamental for getting organised, because it is the start of the pathway that will get you there. Otherwise you are working and living with no real plan, and therefore it is easy to get downtrodden and depressed. To get yourself motivated and to ensure that what you do on a day to day level is getting you towards your goals in life will be a task you will appreciate every day. You will be more focussed and will also find that saying NO to things that you don't want or need to do become more easy for you. You need to know what is important to you, and then work towards that.
- First you must define your goals - try writing down on a blank sheet of paper all the things you would love to do in your life - however crazy they may seem. This is not a test of what you think it will be possible to do - its purely a wish list - money / time / committments no object.
- Next - work out whether the item you have written down is an end result, or something on the way to and end result (i.e. "I want to get qualified in beauty therapy" would be a path to the end goal "I want to run my own business in Beauty Therapy". Doing this will help you to have steps towards goals, and break them down into do-able chunks. You will also by now easily be able to see what seems to be the most important aspect(s) of your life by what your end goals are.
- Now you want to prioritise these goals - starting with what can be done immediately - and working out what is the most important for you. You may choose to do a bit of each goal every week, so that you progress each one, or it may be more suitable to follow the path of one specific goal to conclusion first, and then move on. Whatever works for the specific goals that you have.
- If you can, set times for each goal, so that you always know that things will be dealt with by a given time - and can then leave them to one side for now if required.
-
Its all very well working on your daily priorities and getting things done, but ensure you are working towards your main life goals - where do you want to be in a year, 3 years, 10 years etc... - ensure your priorities reflect these aims. This exercise really focuses your mind on what is really important to you, and you may be surprised at the results.
-
Your priorities will constantly change throughout your life and as life events happen. The best example for this is a new mum - she may have been very career oriented prior to having her first child, but then decides that the priority is bringing up her family until they reach school age - after this time her priority may well be to get back to a career and concentrate on her own development again. Don't be afraid to change your priorities if you change - be true to yourself and you will be happier. (reevaluating your life every 6 months or annually is a great idea - do this by yourself and with your partner/family to ensure you know whats important to you and those close to you)
- Try and balance priorities - I like to use a self made acronym S.M.I.L.E - and I like to run through it in my head (or you could write it down to really focus you!) either every morning or in the evening just before bed. I find it helps to ensure that each area has been focused on during that or the following day. This makes for a very rounded day! The fact it spells smile is something that I like as following it is the key to making me smile each day!
- S stands for Socialising - this can be anything from making a call or sending an email to a friend you haven't seen for a while, or meeting up with people, playing with your children, going out for the evening with your partner etc...
- M stands for Manage the Home - This can encompass cleaning, errands, decorating, shopping, school stuff, home file - anything that helps with running your home more smoothly.
- I stands for Income - This could be simply ensuring you have stuck to a household budget, or that you have worked and gained some income for the house. I have included it here as it is vital to have some income in any household and you need to be focused on it at some time each day
- L stands for Leisure time - think exercise and keeping fit - do a class,go to the gym, play with your children in the park, go for a walk - anything that gets you moving. It is proven that people feel better when they exercise regularly.
- E stands for Eating - This could go in with Manage the Home - but I like to keep it separate as its suc an important part of staying and feeling healthy and happy. Try and keep to at least your 5 a day, balanced healthy meals are vital for you and your family to be on top form each day. Create meal plans and shopping lists that work for your family and you will find that you are sorted much more quickly each week!

Priorities need to be based on 3 things - whats important to you/others, ability to achieve (physically, emotionally or financially) and any constraints (family, health etc..
- When you write a TO DO list always try and prioritise it - anything that can wait will be lower on the list. You could then do one of two things - start with the main priorities for the day, then do a couple of the lower priorities as this will ensure that they are done (my favoured way), OR, do as much as you can each day and work your way down the list. If you rewrite the list each day then the lower priorities will end up moving up the list eventually.
- Don't always focus on time priorities - its just as important to do whats important to you even if it can wait
- Try and take out things that you spend time on but don't enjoy
- Add appointments to your diary for things that are important to you but get lost i.e. call a friend, family day out etc... AND STICK TO THEM just as you would a business appointment. You will ultimately have more time as a result, as you will not waste time feeling guilty about not doing these things and be able to focus on what you are doing even more.
- Learn to say NO - its alright not to go to every function or evening out, its OK not to do something for the school fair this year - give some of your free time to what you feel are good causes and you will feel good about yourself, but giving ALL of your free time will stress you and your family
- Spend your time wisely - you will never have yesterday again - make it all count
- Here are some ideas of what you may class as a priority in your life:-
- Date night for you and your husband each month
- One on one time with each of your children weekly
- Starting to learn a new hobby
- Balancing work and social life better
- Remember to keep looking at your priorities as they will naturally change over time - ensure you are still heading towards where you want to be - don't get lost in the day to day things too much
