Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Limit toys to the storage space that you have - Children won't play with everything as they will forget what they have
Store some toys away in a garage or loft and then rotate them - this way you don't have to have the all out all the time, and the children will get a refreshing change - stopping bordom setting in quite so quickly
Give children a sense of community by getting them to donate a toy(s) they don't need anymore (doing this before christmas can be a good tradition to start in your family as it teaches children that there are less fortunate children than themselves - they will learn to appreciate things more)
I advocate keeping most toys out of the bedroom, especially with younger children, as they will learn that this is a relaxing room to sleep in - if they wake up or can't go to sleep they may be distracted into playing rather than sleeping if their toys are there. I tend to keep soft toys and bedtime books in bedrooms, and all others toys in a space downstairs.
Soft toys are really good stored in a hammock across one corner of a bedroom - keeps them off the floor but still visible
Use large trunks in your living room for toys then you can have a toy free room in the evening
Don't keep anything thats broken or has lost peices
Containerise toys so that liek is with like - jigsaws in one box, craft items in another - it will make it easier to find what you are looking for and easier to play
Think about having a craft box for all paints, play doh etc.. and have it out of reach of little hands - great for bringing out on a rainy day
Get children as young as possible to understand that when they have finished with a toy, they put it back before moving onto another one
Make tidying up a fun game at the end of the day - race each other!
Add coloured spots onto the back of jigsaw peices - makes it much easier to spot which set each one goes with if each one has a different colour and they are all out!
Encourage sharing at a young age by inviting other children over to your home - this is your childs zone and they will have to share their toys. Its a lots easier to share in a public place or at nursery. This is a key skill to learn.
Have a bookcase in the play area too - children love to read and it should be encouraged! Keep bedtime books upstairs, and more lively activity or learning books downstairs.
