Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Decide on a budget up front - and whether anyone will contribute towards the budget - as this will make all the difference for your plans
Decide on what type of wedding / reception / honeymoon you want - again this will help to define what is important to you and where you want to spend money
Look at venues - most important as they get booked up - their availability may determine the wedding date
Winter months are less in demand and can be cheaper - look for deals!
Decide on what is important to you - do you need lots of flowers, or 7 bridesmaids? - Prioritise then you will ensure a day that you want
Shop around or call in favours for everything you want - a cake can be made by a friend, table plan by a sister etc... It makes the day more personal and alleviates some of the stress for you as you know that they will do their best for your big day
Send invites out as early as possible (or at least a save the day) so as many people as possible can come - directions and a wedding list will also be required
Colour schemes, dress code etc.. all make the day unique to you - if you want certain things then don't be afraid to ask for them
Organise stag / hen parties about a month prior to the wedding itself - this gives time to recover, and also people may find it difficult to commit 2 weekends closer to each other to come to both - people are getting busier and busier these days, its also an expensive business for those attending both - so spread out their costs a bit
Don't let people take over - its your day so be firm
Logistics - if you are travelling for your wedding then ensure you don't forget anything - write a list and double check before you set off. For example, at my wedding i asked my sister to take all my wedding outfit as I was travelling with my soon to be husband - she did this perfectly and everything arrived exactly as it should have been - apart from the fact that she had forgotten her own outfit!
Nowadays most people already live together before marrying, so the old fashioned wedding lists doesn't really apply - you aren't making your home together from scratch. Therefore you may want to think about more unusual gifts, Try money towards an unforgettable honeymoon, or a unique peice of art - think outside the box.
Always keep a list of everything that is required for the big day - the budget, timeframe etc... as it will help ensure you stay on track
Spend on the things that really matter and save on those that don't
Don't try and organise yourself fully - let others help - you want to enjoy the day!
