Use these tips to get your organising off to a flying start!
Get both a yearly planner/wallcalendar - and a yearly diary - whatever style, size and shape suits you - then you will be more likely to use it!
Keep the yearly planner in full view of the family - ones that I recommend for families are ones that have a columnn for each member of the family and one spare - then you can easily track all the items that your family are doing on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Add in all special dates on the calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, School holidays etc...) so that you will be able to see exactly whats coming up and what you need to prepare for.
Know what appointments you will need to make for the year and book them now - this can include dentists, vets, eye checks, MOT, Car Servicing, hair etc.... - getting them in the diary will ensure that you make them a priority and also that you won't be trying to fit in a last minute appointment.
In your diary, ensure that you use this for EVERYTHING. If you have two or three places to put your notes, appointments etc... then you will lose track - I even suggest putting your work and leisure time together as then you will see exactly what is taking up your time each day and you won't overbook yourself. If you prefer to segment these slightly, then try a different colour pen for different parts of your life.
Book your annual holiday at the start of the year and make the most of offers that are around at this time of year.
Budget for your year up front and then you won't get any shocks. Try and save a little each month for the big things like holidays, christmas etc... and then you won't have some months where you worry so much about where it will come from. Think about it - Christmas is ALWAYS on 25th December - so why let it creep up on you? Get prepared!
Make time to think about where you want to be this time next year. What steps can you add into your diary to ensure you get there? Thinking of the year as a whole and what you can achieve makes your goals more accessible. If you try and add long term goals into your daily diary stright away then you will more often than not push it out of the way of a more urgent item that comes up - You could go one step further and have a 5 year plan.
"Always keep the bigger picture in mind
then
you won't get bogged down my the little things"
Make time at least twice a year to sit down with your family and discuss how you are all feeling, what is working and what isn't. This is a great time to try out new systems, and see what works and what doesn't. It is only by trial and error that you will get an organising system that will work for you as they are so unique to each and every person. This also works for financial planning - ensuring that you stay on track of the household budget, any job changes and any unusual monetary requirements (such as the need to move house, your car needs replacing etc...)
